It Never Hurts To Say Thank You

We all know that when a company is interviewing for an open position they meet with many candidates. The “filtering” process typically involves reviewing resumes and cover letters, determining which ones to interview then conducting the interviews. If you get to the interview stage you have done well and you have a real chance to be the successful candidate. By that stage you have invested a significant amount of time and effort and in all likelihood are very interested in the position. At all stages of the hiring process you need to look for ways to set yourself apart from others and show that you provide the best fit for the position. There are some “must do’s” for the interview itself:

Be on time, not too early and definitely not late. If you are unsure were the location is, go early to find the office but wait until 5 minutes or so before your scheduled time until you go in. If there is an unavoidable reason for being late, call and explain.
Dress appropriately for the type of business and position that you are applying for. If in doubt it is better to be over-dressed than under-dressed.
Be prepared; bring extra copies of your resume, have some questions ready and know the company you are applying to. You read more about this in our article

After all of this effort there is one more thing you can do that is most often overlooked; send a thank note and send it promptly after the interview. Email makes it very easy to do and it only takes a minute. Be brief and sincere, don’t re-hash the interview. Express your appreciation for the opportunity to be interviewed and confirm your interest in the position. This brings you back to top of mind for the interviewer and sends out a positive message about your personality.
