The Backup Plan (think of going from temp to perm so you’ll have time to get to know a person before you commit)
So, your business is growing and that workload has become a bit too much to handle. In the past you’ve always been able to stay on top of everything, but there comes a time when a seventy-hour workweek no longer makes any sense to either yourself or your family. Any truly successful business owner will tell you one of the greatest assets to their company is managing a successful life/work balance. So before you experience any severe growing pains at work or on the home front, why not consider a temporary backup?
The reality is, as your company grows your responsibilities will multiply in step. And sometimes a permanent staffing solution might not necessarily be the right fit. The wrong choice can impact everything from your bottom line to the morale at your company. Hiring temporary staff can be more cost-effective, affording you the opportunity to screen potential full-time employees before you make a long term commitment. A temporary employee’s schedule may also be more flexible, with more room for nights and weekend work.
Today, more and more businesses are working with a temporary workforce until they are confident they’ve found the right candidate for bigger, more challenging assignments. Plus, a temporary candidate can grow alongside you on your company’s growth and learning curves. This also gives you the opportunity to better evaluate their skill set, their work ethic and their personality and performance. If you’re not satisfied with any of the above, you simply notify their staffing agency and the agency will end their assignment and help you find a better fit.
Keep in mind; a temporary employee might not necessarily always be available when you need them. If they’re juggling more than one temporary assignment, they may be committed elsewhere or have other personal obligations. There is also the possibility that they may find a permanent position or leave the workforce all together. So when you find the ideal temporary candidate, you might want to consider bringing them onboard as a permanent part-time employee until you can welcome them to your team full-time.
